Dynamic and safety-approved TRC worn by U.S. Army soldiers in combat operations

Reston, Va.- QinetiQ North America today announced the first combat use of its Tactical Robotic Controller (TRC) in support of the US Army’s recently-fielded Minotaur and Armadillo unmanned systems.

“Our TRC enables dismounted forces to use a single, lightweight controller to command and control a wide variety of unmanned assets,” said QinetiQ North America’s Technology Solutions Group (TSG) President JD Crouch. “This universal controller mitigates the logistical and training challenges associated with controllers that can only be used for one specific type of unmanned vehicle.”

The TRC is a lightweight, wearable controller that enables the warfighter to control multiple unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unattended ground sensors (UGS). The TRC can be rapidly activated by attaching the communications pack for the systems to be controlled, selecting the touch screen application and initiating control.

The TRC was developed for the U.S. Marine Corps through a continuing contract with the U.S. Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, VA. The Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory uses TRCs to control a wide variety of unmanned aircraft, ground robots and unattended sensors.

“It is not uncommon for robotic controllers to weigh between 20 and 40 pounds,” said Senior Vice President of Unmanned Systems Ed Godere. “This is a significant burden for dismounted forces who are already weighed down by their combat loads. The TRC weighs only 10 pounds and it offers a comprehensive solution with its ability to control multiple platforms, both in the air and on the ground.”

QinetiQ North America has developed a System Development Concept of Operations for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s Tactically Expandable Maritime Platform (TEMP) program

QinetiQ North America has developed a System Development Concept of Operations for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)’s Tactically Expandable Maritime Platform (TEMP) program, the company announced today. This Concept of Operations was created for the TEMP Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HA/DR) mission, and defines a concept for TEMP operations that aligns with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD)’s Plan, Prepare, Respond, Recover methodology for HA/DR missions while simultaneously proposing novel solutions for how the DoD can do more with less.

“We are excited for the opportunities that our Concept of Operations for the TEMP program offers to the DoD,” said Chris Alberg, vice president of QinetiQ North America’s Science, Technology, Modeling and Simulation Programs Division. “Disaster relief missions can be disruptive for the DoD with significant impacts on training, readiness and maintenance cycles. The TEMP concept offers a solution that can save the government significant time, money, and wear and tear on their assets while ensuring that the U.S. retains a strong emergency response capability.”

Together with its partners Sotera Defense Solutions, Inc. and Maersk Line, Limited, QinetiQ North America has been focused on defining the most effective role for the TEMP concept within the HA/DR mission set by applying systems engineering processes to identify stakeholder needs and develop the necessary system requirements. Throughout this process, the company has been engaged with operational stakeholders to identify HA/DR requirements and objectives and generate preliminary system requirements for the TEMP HA/DR concept.

QinetiQ North America will use modeling and simulation to validate the engineering and analytical conclusions from its Concept of Operations and test the viability and effectiveness of using the TEMP concept for HA/DR support. These efforts are expected to culminate in the development and execution of a notional TEMP-specific HA/DR scenario set in the Caribbean (SOUTHCOM) theater. This demonstration is designed to illustrate how commercially available capabilities may be employed by the United Stated Government or DoD in an HA/DR mission to supplement what have traditionally been uniquely military capabilities.

DARPA’S TEMP program is focused on providing alternative solutions for the HA/DR mission, in order to enable COCOM resources to focus on primary warfighting and training operations. The TEMP program addresses this challenge through a novel seabasing concept that employs commercial container ships, civilian air and sea lift capabilities, and ISO standard containerized relief capabilities to supplement current HA/DR objectives to provide rapid relief aid to points of need with less impact on defense personnel and assets.

When fielded to a unit, operators will be able to execute supply and related maintenance actions.

QinetiQ North America will support the GCSS-MC/LCM Program Office to replace four 40 year old legacy supply and maintenance information technology systems. The Program Office is currently fielding the enterprise solution to approximately 40,000 users across the Marine Corps. A deployable capability is also being developed by the Program Office allowing Marines to use the system in austere environments. Future increments will enhance capabilities in warehousing, distribution, logistics planning, decision support, depot maintenance and integration, and will also include emerging technologies to improve asset visibility.

The task order was awarded under QinetiQ North America’s Commercial Enterprise Omnibus Support Service (CEOss) contract. The task order has an 11-month base period of performance with two one-year options, which has a total value of $20 million if the options are exercised.

“With this task order, MARCORSYSCOM has given us an opportunity to greatly increase coordination and efficiency across GCSS-MC support efforts,” said John Radziszewski, executive vice president and general manager, QinetiQ North America. “This will save the government money and help achieve the program manager’s objective of developing an integrated GCSS-MC baseline.”

Tool will help users memorize national and international aviation data sets using a variety of learning tools

QinetiQ North America today announced that its Aviation Data Trainer application is now available in the iTunes Store. The application provides air traffic controllers, pilots, airport staff and flight enthusiasts with a way to memorize and test themselves on the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) data sets—or codes—that are the core of air operations around the world.

The Aviation Data Trainer provides up to three levels of support to assist the user in learning and understanding aviation codes for day-to-day operations. It includes data sets for hundreds of airports, telephony codes, and airline and aircraft identifiers in North America, Europe and around the world.

The Aviation Data Trainer allows users to learn codes at their own pace, using configurable flash cards and tests to evaluate and measure progression, as well as games to test memory. The application is free to download until March 12, after which it will cost $1.99.

“QinetiQ North America has an impressive pedigree in the training and simulation market. Combined with our knowledge of the Federal Aviation Administration, we are offering an innovative and unique training tool that will appeal to both current air traffic controllers and pilots, as well as the next generation of users that expect this type of interactive learning tool,” said John Radziszewski, executive vice president and general manager, QinetiQ North America.

The release of the Aviation Data Trainer is the first of three planned stages of the application: The next level will provide creative training applications to help users learn about different airspaces around the world, and the third level will focus on specific skill sets for air traffic controllers.

QinetiQ North America also plans to add data sets and codes in the future to help users recognize military airspaces and military aircraft.
